What is IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)

1. IVF(In Vitro Fertilization) is an artificial reproductive technique to retrieve oocyte by vaginal ultrasound, select sperms at laboratory, and
culture embryos in vitro, then the better embryos will be transfer to uterus, the pregnancy rate of the first IVF in our center is around 45~50%,
and it’s better than the average pregnancy rate (40%) of other IVF centers around the world. If we combine laser assisted hatching (LAHA),
thepregnancy rate will raise to 50~60%.
2. If you do the IVF treatment for three successful cycles, the pregnancy rate will   raise around 90~95%.
3. Ordinary women extrude one oocyte per menstrual cycle, if by ovarian induction; you can get better quality and quantity oocytes. In order to get
better oocytes, some medicines will be used in IVF treatment (Ex. Regulation of menstrual cycle, Pituitary inhibitor, and ovarian stimulating agent).
4. Generally, the oocytes for IVF are induced by gonadotropin (ovarian stimulating agent) and the follicle’s maturation is observed by vaginal
ultrasound, It takes around 4~5 days for follicle’s maturation, Oocyte retrieval day is arranged when the follicle’s mature. The oocyte retrieval
is under vaginal ultrasound guide, through vagina, because it is woundless, and recovery more rapidly.
5. Sperms for IVF must select and purified. First, husband should collect semen in sterilize bottle by masturbation. Then send it to laboratory within
2 hours at room temperature.
6. Laser assisted hatching (LAHA) is a technique to open zona pellucida of embryo’s in order to help embryos Implantation.
7. TESA, MESA , and PESA, Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection(ICSI) is a technique to inject single sperm to an oocyte, It’s for severe sperm
problems or fertilization failure,It’s fertilization rate is around 85% as same as IVF, If there are enough oocytes, the pregnancy rate is around
45~50%.If your husband is azoospermia, he must make to testicular operation, if it’s normal, he may use fresh semen sample.
8. Cryopreservation of embryos is a technique to stock extra embryos. If this cycle is pregnant, you can thaw the embryos for next time for another
baby. If this cycle fails, you can thaw the embryos for the next cycle, the pregnancy rate by cryo-embryos is around 30%, and it is not necessary to
receive medicines again. (embryo strorage fee NTD:6,000/per year) (approx. US$186)

IVF Cost at TMC Fertility Centre, Malaysia

Below is the response that I received to my letter about the IVF cost, IVF success rate and IVF process at the TMC Fertility Centre in Malaysia. A very quick response – received the same day that I emailed the letter to them.

The web address for the clinic is http://www.tmcfertility.com/

I received a further email from TMC Fertility Centre in Malaysia in September 2010 providing updated statistics and pricing information, which is what is shown below:

We are pleased to provide you the following information in helping you to have a better planning shall you consider undergo fertility treatments at our medical centre:

1. Ideal timing of visit to Malaysia

As far as possible we should see the couple between 21st to 23rd day of the cycle (the first day of the cycle is the first day of a proper period). During this visit, the couple undergoes a full assessment and subsequently commencement of treatment. The husband would also need to undergo a semen analysis for which he should abstain between 3 – 5 days prior.

2. IVF/ICSI treatment cycle

Treatment involves a series of daily injections for 4 ½ weeks to 5 weeks and 2 to 3 clinic visits. You will need to be seen every 3 to 5 days until egg collection and subsequently embryo transfer 2 to 3 days later. If you need PGS/PGD, this will be done 3 – 5 days (blastocyst) after egg collection. Excess embryos if available will be frozen. The entire treatment takes approximately 32 days (IVF / ICSI only) or 36 days (IVF + PGS). If you need PGS/PGD, you should be seen at the Kota Damansara Centre

3. Hospital Facilities

Our hospital offers comprehensive fertility care management. All fertility procedures are performed as day case, ie. no hospital admissions are necessary. However, if you require accommodation / lodging, airport transfer we are happy to help you arrange.

There is also long stay apartments at the cost of Rm600-800 per week. These can be found on AirBNB. Below are a few examples.

We prefer if you can have the entire treatment with us to ensure consistency and high success rates, but if you wish, you can have part of the treatment with your own fertility specialist and come back to us for egg collection and transfer. Letter requesting IVF Cost, IVF Success Rate and other Information

I have contacted a number of clinics around the world requesting information on their IVF treatment and I will be publishing many of their replies here so that you can benefit from having all the replies in one place rather than having to go through the whole process yourself – hopefully it will help you to determine which clinics are worth further investigation.

I will tag each post with the country name, so if there is a particular country you are interested in go to the tags (in the left hand column) and select that country to see all clinics that I have posted so far. I will also let you know how quickly each clinic responded to my request for information. Please bear with me, I will get the responses up as quickly as I can but it is taking some time doing all the emails, waiting for responses then getting them published here.

On the whole the letter that I sent was pretty much the same for each clinic, after asking around (thanks to everybody who helped me) I compiled a list of sixteen questions. This is what I asked:

I am looking to have IVF treatment due to a failure to become pregnant after over ten years. After all the tests the doctors in the UK say that this is “unexplained” and IVF is the way forward given my age – I am 43.

I would be grateful if you could give me some information on your clinic, both for my own use and so that I can also pass it on to others in a similar situation to myself through my IVF blog (www.ivfcost.net).

The questions I have regarding treatment at your clinic are:

  1. What is the current success rate for your clinic? (preferably by age as I know that the success rate will be much lower for somebody of my age)
  2. How many cycles do you perform per year at the clinic?
  3. What is the maximum age that you treat?
  4. Are there any fertility conditions that you will not treat?
  5. What is your embryo transfer policy? How many embryos will you replace at one time?
  6. What is the basic cost of the IVF treatment?
  7. What additional costs would / could be incurred?
  8. What happens to the costs if the cycle has to be abandoned?
  9. How long would I need to be in ________ for?
  10. Who deals with the logistics of flights and accommodation?
  11. How is the pre-treatment carried out?
  12. How do I get medication?
  13. How will I be monitored?
  14. How will I know that I am not being under / over stimulated?
  15. If I have a problem whilst in the UK who would I go to?
  16. Is the clinic registered with any regulatory body?

I apologise for the long list, the more I look into having IVF treatment the more complex it seems to get!

I look forward to hearing from you.
